Immigration does not appear to be a crucial concern of the Italian government. But circumstances have obliged Renzi's Government to invest significant energy and resources to rescuing asylum seekers from the Mediterranean Sea. Renzi tried with some success to involve the EU in managing this issue. But last November's terrorist attacks and mounting public opposition across Europe are creating a negative attitude toward refugees. These political feelings make it more difficult for the Italian government to address other issues, such as reforming the nationality law and abolishing the crime of illegal immigration. Within this context, most of the activities and services aimed at migrants are handled by voluntary organizations that are in fact bridging the gaps in public policy.
