Introduction: a lack of specific and shared culture between health professions of rehabilitation may be hypothesized . It can be due to an inadequate mutual knowledge among these professions.Aim: to describe and analyse the knowledge of a sample of health professions of rehabilitation students with regard to the different professions of rehabilitation and the meaning of the term “rehabilitation”.Materials and methods: between April and September 2013 a sample of 80 students (short degrees in health professions of rehabilitation sciences – University of Padua) and 9 students (2 years of specialization in health professions of rehabilitation sciences – University of Padua) was evaluated. All students filled in an ad hoc questionnaire. Results: the 5% of short degrees students has been able to identify all the eight health professions of rehabilitation; the percentage increases among students with the 2 years of specialization: 66,7% (p<0,0001). Some “cross topics” in rehabilitation have been identified: “aims of rehabilitation process”; “relationship with patient”; “way of understanding the relationship in rehabilitation”; “topics, interventions and measures”; “roles and competences”; “knowledge”.Conclusions: some emerging topics have a significant influence on the students’ developing professional identity. The process of unification of the different professions of rehabilitation may include a mediation of knowledge and objectives. This process represents a theoretical and epistemological mediation, as well. We may speculate that the identification of shared objectives (theoretical and practical) between professions will increase the development of a coherent professional identity in rehabilitation. This process of identification, research and study about health professions of rehabilitation can be included in an educational and academic setting.
