Should students be required to participate actively in class by taking notes, should PowerPoint® slides be printed out and made available for them, or should detailed and comprehensive handouts be prepared? The traditional didactic lecture format continues to be one of the most commonly used instructional approaches at university level, and preparing a lecture usually raises the question of whether and how to provide lecture material for the students. While students are keen on getting learning material provided by the lecturer, because it identifies the relevant contents for the exam and guides their learning, instructors wonder what kind of material is the most suitable in order to prepare students for self-study. Is note taking beneficial for learning or is it better to provide a comprehensive handout that guarantees the accuracy of information taken home by the students? And if so, should that handout be given before or after class and how detailed should the information be?Based on research literature, this narrative review discusses the advantages and the disadvantages of different types of notes: personal notes, lecture slide handouts, guided and detailed notes. The overview and description of the different ways of preparing lecture material for students are intended to enable the reader to reflect on how to structure this material in his/her own educational environment.
