The Web 2.0 and social web tools offer new means for teaching and learning and to facilitate continuing medical education. Many tools provided by web 2.0 are already in use as a common widespread application in services providing medical education. Even if Web 2.0 and other social media have many potentials, they are still unknown or scarcely used by many medical professionals. This review highlights the main characteristics of these new tools, with a special emphasis on the typical model of web 2.0 collaboration, which is a powerful way to facilitate the creation of communities of practice creation among the involved practitioners.
