The European Social Model (ESM) is often referred to an European model of society, including solidarity and social cohesion, redistributive policies and market, social rights and social partnership as main components. Nevertheless social sciences analysis focused more on institutionalization and policy-making than on societal transformation. The essay approaches the concept of ESM aiming to: a) a critical analysis of its genesis at the EU level and the lack of reference to a social dimension; b) a reconstruction of the debate in the field of the political and social sciences, stressing the differences and the similarities among diverse its meanings and definitions; c) a sociological definition of the ESM useful to better understand the social dimension of the European integration.
