The project “Città studi campus sostenibile” launched in 2011 by the Polytechnic School and the University of Milan, aiming at renewing the district according to sustainability principles, is presented here. The initiative originates from the evidence that universities can play a crucial role in supporting policies of sustainability and innovation in territories. The project promotes a process based on a comprehensive involvement of the whole community, in order to share experiences and co-create innovation towards sustainability within the district. Working tools for managing the complexity of an initiative that involves over a hundred people were created, namely: a web plat-form to ‘listen’ to the issues emerging from the community and the establishment of discussion boards. Hence, it was necessary to start a consideration on the proper method to best manage the preparation of a highly participatory urban masterplan, mainly consisting of minute and diffused actions falling over territories. Three years after the launch, the management machine of the process has been improved and several projects have been carried out. In particular, as a result of a fruitful collaboration with public stakeholders, the project has achieved recognition and tangible outcomes, like the re-appropriation for public use of the square that represents the gate of the campus, which was converted from a parking lot to a pedestrian area, revitalized through several public initiatives.
