Paolo Mantegazza, the first ever to teach Europe’s first course on Anthropology, conceived of his discipline as the natural history of man. His approach was a materialistic one, even with regard to mental phenomena, yet it was never reductionist. In contrast with French and English researchers, he felt that anthropology and ethnology ought always to proceed hand in hand, and he criticized every attempt to privilege craniology in particular. As the founder of the Museo nazionale and the Società italiana di antropologia ed etnologia, he was among the earliest to recognize that individual variability within any population was at least equal to, if not greater than, the differences between one population and another, and along these lines he succeeded – thanks to an ingenious and important experiment – to undermine all the foundations that sustained the concept of race.
