120This essay is a study, over a period of about a thousand years, of the works and authors from Antiquity who paid particular attention and interest, and had different reactions and positions on madness and madmen. Medical doctors, philosophers and clergymen showed their understanding of mental disease of organic origin. However, commoners did not, and reacted with contradicting feelings and behaviours varying from fear to compassion, mockery, marginalization and physical violence. Philosophers and clergymen condemned spiritual madness from an ethical point of view. Intellectuals showed more understanding of madness due to divine or evil possession. Common people had contradicting reactions: compassion, admiration, but also rock throwing.
