150 years after his death, Giovanni Battista Amici, the optical instrument maker from Modena, continues to be one of the most foremost figures on the industrial and technical scene of the first half of the nineteenth century. Here we offer an outline of his activity through his participation at the Esposizione Italiana in Florence in 1861, and recall the contribution he made to the activities that developed on the hill of Arcetri after his death. The presence in Florence of the large achromatic refractor, Amici I, which he had built during the time he was in charge of the Specola of the Royal Museum, was one of the reasons behind the foundation of the Ob- servatory of Arcetri by one of Amici’s students, Giovanni Battista Donati.
