High-resolution spectroscopic measurements are fundamental for determining the physical and chemical characteristics of cold stars and of any planets orbiting around them. This is a scientific field that has not yet been greatly developed, partly as a result of the enormous technical difficulties connected with the construction of adequate instrumentation. The GIANO spectrometer is the first instrument in the world that can make efficient and complete high-resolution spectral observations of a broad class of astronomical objects.
