The increasing squeeze on agriculture caused in the recent years a steep decrease in the number of Italian farms and in tillable land, according to official statistics. The objective of this paper is to describe how the farm system is dealing with this difficult economic conjuncture, measuring its ability to adapt to the new scenario. The analysis of typological migrations showed that Italian farms are highly flexible in their strategies. Although the large migrations were heterogeneous and opposite directions (determining small net variations), the data showed an important reduction of the less competitive typologies, while the most competitive farms are holding grounds, absorbing production factors.
