In codifying the hegemonic image of an acquisitive and instrumental individual bound to another by a conflictual or indifferent relationship, contractualist and liberal modern thinking has in fact given women the task of representing a different form of subjectivity: a ‘giving’ subjectivity capable of taking care of the other. But this has ‘sacrificial’ implications which have deprived the female subject of autonomy and dignity. The essay intends to consider a form of subjectivity that values the qualities of female care and giving, without denying the importance of autonomy: a responsible subjectivity, equipped with freedom and self-determination but also aware of the constituent dependence of the other.
