This paper challenges the argument for assuming that one single principle could provide acceptable solutions for all the issues discussed in bioethics, either self-determination or quality instead of sanctity of life. The example of eugenics bears out that what is really at stake is the capacity to cope with very complex decisions and intertwined values, that involve political no less than moral responsibility. Maybe it’s not impossible to be ‘pro-choice’ and ‘pro-life’ at the same time. Keywords: eugenics, equality, autonomy, recognition
