The numerous, medieval (ca. 13th-18th centuries CE) commentaries on the major Sanskrit epic and pura?ic texts constitute a significant genre of pre-modern South Asian secondary scholarship, the study of which raises significant issues of hermeneutics, philology, theology, and translation theory. The present study focuses on several Ramaya?a commentators and explores the ways in which they identify and confront several exemplary philological, chronological, theological and intertextual problems that a large, popular, encyclopedic work such as the Valmiki Ramaya?a comes to present in the course of its long genetic history and its rich and complex intertextual relations with a wide variety of other texts.
