In the light of a passage of the Paratri?sikatattvavivara?a and on account of the well-known correlation between language and consciousness in Abhinavagupta’s thought, this essay supports a cognitivelinguistic interpretation of the rasa theory. The article consists in an outline of the essence of poetry (1), an analysis of the aesthetic experience from the perspective of the artist (2) and from that of the connoisseur (3), an assessment of language qua consciousness as the crucial element in the experience of every possible art form (4), a comparison between Abhinava and Gadamer as to the centrality of language in aesthetics (5) and an appraisal of their divergences as to human ontology (6).
