Mirza Ma?har Gan-i Ganan (1699–1781) is one of the outstanding personalities of Indian Sufism in the Eighteenth century, and he distinguished himself as a noteworthy inheritor of the naqšbandi-mugaddidi tradition. His religious and spiritual doctrines contain features that may appear innovative, for instance, his peculiar approach towards Hinduism. From his letters, however, it is clearly understood that his main effort was to reaffirm the basic system of belief of the orthodox sunni tradition and, in particular, to pursue the doctrinal viewpoints of the naqšbandi reformer Šay? A?mad Sirhindi (d. 1624).
