Exploring what links the Nath Yogis to the subterranean world, this articles focuses on the relationships between two underground chambers: the gupha, the meditation cave, and the samadhi, the burial place (where the Yogi is supposed to remain eternally in ecstatic state). It looks also at the different myths connecting Gorakhnath and the Yogis to the subterranean serpent-deities, the Nagas. Relying on texts, myths and current Nath practices, the article shows how these manifold connections take their meaning from common references to body symbolism.
