This paper explores the possibility of using stored natural gas as a guarantee on behalf of Storage System Operators, Transmission System Operators and banks for payments due from storage and dispatching users. By giving an overview of the Italian private law, Network Codes and acts adopted by the Authority for Electricity and Gas, the paper addresses the following issues: natural gas as pledged property; how storage users could pledge their stored natural gas as a guarantee for payments due to the Storage System Operator; how to verify prerequisites for pledging stored natural gas as a guarantee for payments due to the Transmission System Operator and banks - that is to subjects not involved in storage activities.
