A renaissance of an interest for the protection of the victim has been experienced in Italy during the last years, with a linked proliferation of many different initiatives in the field of restorative justice and mediation. The article, through a detailed analysis of the many experiences realised within the Italian criminal justice system since the last decades and, in particular of the activities of the Permanent Observatory on Restorative Justice and Mediation, propose an analysis of the state of art of mediation in Italy and a reflection on the general meaning of restorative justice.
