This article explores the role of the body in commercial phone sex services. In thistype of sex work, interaction between sex workers and customers is mediated bythe telephone and the body seems to be absent. The trained use of the voice andof a competent «cultural narrative» by telephone operators is examined in detail toreveal how they manage to make the body «an absent presence» (Shilling 1993).
