Designing Ibsen's Rosmersholm atthe Teatro della Pergola broughtEdward Gordon Craig to Florence at the end of 1906. Monthslater, the English stage designer,writer, publisher, etcher and engraver returned to live in the citywhere he produced a magazineof rare elegance !e Mask (1908-1929). In it Craig combined inthe magazine his progressivethinking about the theatre andhis refined wood engraving, bothpassions renewed by Florence. Atthe Arena Goldoni - his theatre-workshop-studio-atelier - he'patented' his famous screens,revived his special production ofbookplates, and learned to carvewith Stephen Haweis, an Englishartist who had studied in Pariswith Mucha and Carrière. Craig'sFlorentine «good deal of etching» produced two portfoliosbetween 1907 and early 1908,«connected with his dream ofan Ideal !eatre». One of his«most serious works», the firstprecious copy of the first portfolio, is held in Florence, acquiredby that particular bibliophile,Bernard Berenson.
