74The prolific activity of senese painterDomenico Beccafumi (1486-1551)as book illustrator is still not verywell known. After the recent rediscoveriesof three series of virgilianand ariostean woodcuts for the venetiantypography, the small xylographymade to celebrate the victory ofthe battle of Porta Camollia in Siena(1526) is a minor work in the eclecticcareer of this mannerist artist that allowsus to discuss the complex politicalsituation of the Tuscan city in thefirst part of 16th century and to reconnectthis commitment in theframework of senese publishing industryand Beccafumi's abundantproduction as an engraver.
