After external restorations and archaeologicalexplorations of thecrypt (where the stoneworks of theexedra belonging to the Forum Paciswere placed), in 1937 the Conti'sTower was inaugurated as headquartersof the FederazioneNazionale Arditi d'Italia (NationalFederation of Italian Braves), an associationthat used to represent specialshock troops employed duringthe First World War; its componentshad supported the Fascist partysince its constitution. AlessandroParisi, multi decorated Ardito andpresident of the Federation as well, died in 1938 during a car crash. Then Mussolini stated the coffinwould be placed in the Tower'scrypt, usually destined to the cult offallen soldiers. The ashes have beendeposed in an ancient sarcophagusgiven to the Duce from the Barberinifamily, and the surrounding wasentirely transformed thanks to adecor that made use of a complexsymbolic setup, recovering religiousallegories and linking the Braves tothe city of Rome and the SavoyMonarchy. From that moment on,the Tower became the sepulcher of ahero and it strengthened as a highlysymbolic and representative placealong Via dell'Impero.
