84In the 1934, two years after the inaugurationof Via dell'Impero , therehas been the demolition of the blockcontaining the Torre dei Conti(lastmedieval memory survived in theImperial Fora place), and AntonioMuñoz's project for an external settlementfinally started up. The sideof the tower most affected byrestoration work was the west front, the one that had suffered the main structural disorders with the passageof time. This side presented aprospect of regular and aligned windows, towards Via dell'Impero, signs of the tower's late residentialusage. Although a deep historicaland constructive knowledge of theobject, whose the archaeologist Coliniwas maybe guarantor as well,Muñoz projected a new façade realizedin a generic medieval style, butfar from both an ancient and a modernimage, as shown by many representations. So the street of Mussolinireceived a totally re-inventedtower, fitting well with the estheticof Via dell'Impero and meant to becomealmost a paradigmatic modelof medieval tower, to the detrimentof any historical and philologicalreason.
