This research aims at casting a newlight on the involvement of Venetianconnoisseur Giovanni Battista Cavalcasellein the heated cultural and politicaldebate about the reform of theAcademies of Fine Arts in the postunificationnational context. After ananalysis on the genesis of such reform, the essay takes into account theemblematic case of the Accademia diSan Luca in Rome, a stronghold ofacademic tradition that, despite astrenuous resistance, was eventuallydeprived of its centuries-long teachingactivities. The documents and literatureof the period identify GiovanniBattista Cavalcaselle, an honorarymember of the Giunta di BelleArti, as the author of the reform, shaped with the purpose of testing inthe Capital city an innovative, exemplarydidactic model susceptible tobe extended to all artistic institutionsthroughout the country.
