47The Torre dei Conti has been builtabove the north-east exedra of theForum Pacis (or Templum Pacis),from which wide portions came tolight during the recent excavationsof Jubilee Years. The author (one ofthese excavations' protagonists) describesthe arisen structures and thisforum's characteristics in comparisonwith the other Imperial Forums. The emperor Vespasian, who orderedthe building of Forum Pacisand inaugurated it in 75 a.C., wantedto realize in the big colonnadedsquare - almost entirely in clay courtand with a series of tanks borderedby rose hedges - an enormous garden, often taken as a model from thismoment on. The complex was dedicatedto the Pax represented in thecolossal statue placed in the cultroom in the middle of the southerncolonnade, but it must have had alsoa "museum" vocation, as somesources demonstrate, together withnew findings of statues' marblebases.
