In the documents kept in the HistoricalArchive of the Accademia di SanLuca, Antonio Canova is never mentioneduntil his official admission asa member of merit in 1800. He arrivedin Rome in 1779. One of thejustifications for this omission can befound in some debates which tookplace between the Venetian sculptorand some members of the Accademiadi San Luca in occasion of the inaugurationof the Ganganelli monumentin 1787. One of the most ardentopponents was Andrea Bergondi,a less know artist today, who influencedthe life of the Academy formany years. Bergondi was opposedin his ascent by some artists whomade a formal civil case against theAcademy and Bergondi, which was asign of the search for innovation andfor solutions to the profound resistancethat survived in the AcademicCollege. The reality of the Accademiadi San Luca in the second half ofthe 1700s is characterized by a rigidclosure that makes the institutionimpermeable to every artistic innovationand contemporary theoreticaldebate which was concentrated insteadin the private academies heldby the artists, which were founded asalternative places and were effectivein contrast to the inadequacy of theHistorical Academy.
