Toys and games have a crucial role in determining the development of genderidentity. Our contribution will present a review of the studies that have addressed gender differences in play activities and in choosing toys. The reasons underlying preference for toys among different age children and the ways in which the social context affects gender-typed play activities will be examined. The consequences of gender-typed play activities on the development of cognitive, motor, and social abilities will also be studied. Some implications of the debate on the biological vs. environmental origin of gender differences in play preferences and activities as well as implications related to the development of stereotyped gender identities will be explored.
