Geography today, as well as other disciplines, is affected by the so called ‘2.0’ phenomenon, typically concerning the Web and the applications there available. In particular the Web 2.0 concept recalls multimedia contents created for the Internet by users, indicating therefore something ‘alive’, not created in a top-down approach but following a bottom down one, and as a creation performed by the same community of users and creators of information. Information is not therefore managed by skilled professionals and available through a ‘black box’ as an Internet website or as a piece of software, but single users are capable and willing to participate to the process of contents’ creation. The widespread availability of ‘geographically informed devices’ (cell phones, GPS devices, virtual globes, etc.) allow unskilled users to create their own geographical contents and broadcast them. Such ‘neogeographers’ produce wide sets of data that can be accessed by everybody through the web. Here we ask how geography deals with such issues related to the presence of ‘unskilled’ neogeographers and to the concept of ‘neogeography’. Other than that, a question is on how from such phenomenon and data production geography can gain elements for new lines of research and applications.
