534The deflationary view of truth is the view according to which the entire conceptual and theoretical role of truth may be explained in terms of the function of the predicate "true" in our language, and all that need be assumed in order to account for such function is that certain trivial equivalences hold. The version of deflationism advocated by Paul Horwich faces some troubles, due to the assumption that the bearers of truth are propositions. A formulation of the deflationary view in terms of utterances or sentences is preferable. Such a formulation may be said to face some other troubles. But the objections raised so far against it are not as serious as they may seem at first sight.
