This article illustrates the historiographical debate about the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE, 1973-1975). The article shows that the CSCE is prominent in a number of narratives, and key to a deeper understanding of détente, transatlantic relations, and European integration. Finally, it demonstrates that, despite more than thirty years of scholarship, there is still significant scope for further research.
