In this note it is argued that both mathematics and history are useful tools in economics; but their support to economics are different. While mathematics is fundamental to every economic theorizing, a general knowledge of history is more useful in applied economic work. As a point of fact, economists well trained in mathematics do not seem ready to consider history as a useful tool to guide their research, and similarly economists putting their work in a historic perspective generally do not consider mathematics very seriously.
