Titolo Tolleranza e commercio. Auerbach legge Voltaire. Periodico Quaderni storici Anno: 2002 - Volume: 37 - Fascicolo: 1 - Pagina iniziale: 259 - Pagina finale: 283
In a famous passage of his "Lettres Philosophiques" Voltaire stressed the connection between commerce and tolerance, making fun of religions as an absurd, intrinsically divisive phenomenon. Two centuries later Erich Auerbach submitted Voltaire's remarks to a close, critical reading. By replacing Voltaire's passage and Auerbach's criticism in their respective contexts, the paper attempts to clarify their complex, elusive implications.
