Il materiale scultoreo altomedievale conservato in Ravenna ha avuto meno fortuna rispetto a quello dei secoli V-VI, che da almeno un secolo è oggetto di studio. Forse questa è la conseguenza della esigua quantità di manufatti. In genere i frammenti ravennati, attribuibili ai secoli che vanno dal VII al IX, appartengono a quella produzione diffusasi durante il periodo carolingio, caratterizzata da pochi e ricorrenti motivi decorativi. Un solo oggetto, conservato presso il Museo Nazionale di Ravenna, esula da questo gruppo sia per i temi che vi sono raffigurati, sia per la resa. Si tratta di un sarcofaghetto con la fronte decorata, che ad oggi, non ha attirato l’interesse degli studiosi. In questa sede si propone una analisi del pezzo.    The early medieval sculptural objects preserved in Ravenna has had less success than that of the 5th-6th centuries, which have been studied for at least a century. Perhaps this is the consequence of the small amount of objects. In general, the Ravenna fragments, attributable to the centuries ranging from the 7th to the 9th, belong to the production that spread during the Carolingian period, characterized by few and recurring decorative motifs. Only one object, kept at the National Museum of Ravenna, falls outside this group both for the themes that are depicted there, and for the rendering. It is a small sarcophagus with a decorated forehead, which to date has not attracted the interest of scholars. Here an analysis of the piece is proposed.
