The article discusses first and foremost the very possibility of speaking about the foreign policy of a pope. The Author believes that it is possible at two conditions. First, using he term in a much deeper and broader sense than is normally done. International politics here means attention to the universal common good and to the commons, such as the environment, social justice, peace. Second, the only way to highlight correctly the main drivers of the international positioning of a pope is through comparison. In this article the case studies are those of Benedict XVI and Francis
