While it is generally agreed that democracy is good in itself, it is not clear that it promotes other desirable outcomes such as economic growth. This note provides some evidence that democracy promotes growth indirectly by Granger causing an increase in correlates of high growth — long life expectancy, low fertility and high government education expenditure. Since these outcomes are inqportant in themselves, this is direct evidence that democracy Granger causes an improved physical quality of life.
