THE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF CONSUMERS AND BUSINESSES. - Tourism and restaurant services are undoubtedly among the sectors most affected by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper proposes an empirical analysis to evaluate these consequences under both a demand and a supply perspective. On the one hand, it aims at understanding the changes in consumer behavior; on the other hand, it investigates the impact on economic performance and strategies implemented by companies. The study is based on two surveys, one aimed at consumers and one at firms. The data highlights that the demographic and pre-Covid purchase characteristics of consumers affect their perceived safety and trust in hotels and restaurants, thus influencing their behavior during the pandemic. When analyzing the sentiment towards the recovery, firms are generally less confident than consumers. However, a significant share of respondents say they are confident about the resilience of their business in the medium-long term, despite widespread inaction emerges in implementing specific actions to prevent the negative effects of the pandemic in the near future.
