Il contributo analizza un ciclo figurativo di contenuto eucaristico eseguito a Macerata alla fine del Cinquecento: la cappella maggiore della chiesa di Santa Maria delle Vergini. In particolare, è stata riservata attenzione alla committenza, ai dati storico-documentari che ne attestano le vicende decorative, ai caratteri stilistici e iconografici delle opere pittoriche.La cappella, di patronato della Compagnia dei Bifolchi, la confraternita degli agricoltori maceratesi, costituisce un caso quasi unico, per complessità e ottimo stato di conservazione, di cantiere decorativo della Controriforma nelle Marche. Affidata inizialmente al pittore maceratese Gaspare Gasparrini, alla sua morte la decorazione fu assegnata ai fratelli Cesare e Vincenzo Conti, pittori marchigiani precedentemente attivi nei prestigiosi cantieri romani promossi da Sisto V. La cappella ospita una tela con l’Ultima Cena e scene veterotestamentarie connesse all’eucarestia, opere che espongono e sottolineano, con particolari accorgimenti iconografici, le dottrine e i dogmi ribaditi al Concilio di Trento. This paper consists of an analysis regarding an Eucharistic figurative and decorative cycle carried out in Macerata at the end of the 16th century: the main chapel of the church of Santa Maria delle Vergini. This research has been focusing on historical and archival information about the cycle, on its patrons and on the stylistic and iconographic patterns of the paintings.The chapel, whose patrons were the “Bifolchi”, a civic confraternity of farmers, represents an almost unique case of artistic workshop in the Marche region during the age of Counter-Reformation, mainly due to its complexity and excellent state of preservation. The decoration of this chapel was initially commissioned to the painter Gaspare Gasparrini from Macerata: after his death, it was entrusted to the brothers Cesare and Vincenzo Conti, Marchisan painters who had been working in the roman workshops during the papacy of Sixtus V. The chapel houses a painting depicting The Last Supper and frescos of episodes from the Old Testament; these scenes are connected with the theme of the Eucharist, intending to illustrate and underline through particular iconographic expedients the dogmas reaffirmed by the Council of Trento.
