La primera exposición de arte catalán celebrada en el extranjero tuvo lugar en el Musée du Jeu de Paume de París en 1937. Acontecida en plena Guerra Civil española, la exposición “L’Art Catalan. Du Xe siècle au XVe siècle” fue doblemente signifi cativa: actuó salvaguardando el arte de la guerra y dio a conocer internacionalmente la producción artística de una nación, la catalana, que veía seriamente amenazada su existencia. El artículo analiza el aparato ideológico de la exposición teniendo en cuenta su encaje en un marco preestablecido – la articulada política de exposiciones del museo parisino –, haciendo especial hincapié en su singularidad respecto a las demás exposiciones acogidas por el Jeu de Paume durante el periodo de entreguerras. Se demuestra que si la exposición de arte catalán pudo llevarse a cabo exitosamente fue debido, en gran parte, a la complicidad del gobierno francés en un momento en el que el desenlace de la guerra española era incierto y cualquier intervención exógena podía ayudar a proyectar al exterior una determinada imagen de los dos bandos en contienda.The exhibition “L’Art Catalan. Du Xe siècle au XVe siècle” that took place at the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1937, was the fi rst exhibition of Catalan art held abroad. It took place during the Spanish Civil War and was therefore doubly signifi cant: it played a safeguard role for artworks during the war and additionally revealed internationally the artistic works of the Catalan nation whose existence was severely threatened. The following paper surveys the ideological display of the exhibition by analysing its correspondence within an established framework – that of the management–policy of the Paris museum –, underlining its uniqueness compared to other exhibitions hosted by the Jeu de Paume in the interwar period. We demonstrate that the success of the Catalan art exhibition was due to the complicity of the French government, at a time when the outcome of the Spanish war was yet uncertain, and any exogenous intervention could have projected abroad a determined image of each of the contending sides.
