The essay’s main issue concerns the concept of «Modern State», which can hardly synthetize the complex and subtle art of ruling early modern states. In the first part the essay takes into account three different sources: a treatise written by Johann Jacob Moser (1769); a legal advice (consilium) written by Aimone Cravetta (1534-1535); the well known Johannes Althusius’ Politica methodice digesta (1614). The second part offers a short review of three brand new scholarly essays about the origins of the Modern State (Luigi Blanco), the Italian Ancient Régime (Marco Bellabarba), and an interpretation of the history of institution (Guido Melis).
