There is an increasing development of supranational legal regimes. The most important and most developed among these is the European Union and its dense institutional framework. To explain such regimes, and in particular the European Union one, several scholars are now referring to the notion of global constitutionalism. The article intends to present the main approaches to global constitutionalism, and the main versions of its doctrine, focally considered from the perspective of the European Union legal evolution. Such a notion, global constitutionalism, however - this is the article's main argument - seems unable to give a proper and informative account of present supranational legal regimes, especially of the European Union institutional asset. Reasons are given to justify such critical stance, cautioning about an ideological strategy that possibly lurks behind that overloaded notion.
