The partecipatory process of a community envolved in its biggest event: the case of study “Matera European Capital of Culture 2019”. - The organisation of a big event, according to literature, is a strategic choice for a destination since it allows the promotion of the territory fostering its relaunch, the increase of its attractiveness and the construction of a strong destination image. Among big events the election of the “European Capital of Culture” must be mentioned, since it represents a good marketing tool able to promote the selected city key factors, to activate important tourist flows and reposition the destination image. They are important processes also for the effects they have on the local community who hosts the event, and is involved in accelerated cultural exchanges in a context that often is being redefined. The Foundation Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), in collaboration with the Foundation Matera 2019, conducted a research involving residents, stakeholders and tourism workers to evaluate the impacts of Matera2019 on tourism and to investigate local community’s perception of the middle-long term opportunities offered by this event. The first part of this study is more theoretical, the second one analyses cases studies of other past successful European Capitals of Culture, in detail the focus is on the politics and the actual benefits obtained in these cities.Then the qualitative-quantitative analysis, with interviews to privileged witnesses and questionnaires to residents and hospitality operators of Matera and its hinterland, provided important empirical data about Matera 2019 and investigated the perception of the opportunities coming from the nomination.
