Convents and Monasteries of Sorrento peninsula: a new hospitality sustainable form. - The field of hospitality in the Sorrento peninsula can boast a deep-rooted tradition that dates back to the early nineteenth century, when it was often exercised by opening the local stately homes to foreigners, subsequently transforming palaces and country houses into accommodation facilities. Many hotels, especially in Sorrento, have in fact this origin and still provide very high quality standards. With the development of mass tourism and the emerging of new types of travelers, the enhancement of accommodation facilities, particularly since World War II, has occurred seamlessly, growing not only in terms of new structures but also in terms of number of bed places. Anyway, the accommodation offer, which is still in many cases hotel-based, cannot be separated from other forms of hospitality, which both in their “official” component (e.g., camp sites, hostels, holiday cottages, b&bs) and in their “unofficial” component (e.g., second homes and houses for rent) appear rather inadequate. In the last decade, hospitality in religious structures like convents, abbeys, monasteries, and guest houses, has gained popularity. Once they have lost – or revisited – their original functions, such premises have turned into accommodation facilities inspired, in a way, by a type of “sustainable” tourism that may improve and encourage social intercourse and solidarity among people.
