Surfing on the web page of the World Bank you can find -in the section dedicated to Africa tourism- the following slogan: "Africa is on the move. New jobs are needed. Tourism can provide them". Surely, tourism is an important element to achieve the economic development, but it is also something more. In fact, for the native populations having a gainful employment is a way to reach a certain development from the point of view of socio-cultural and living conditions. Starting the analysis from the data published by the World Bank and other international organizations (as OECD, UNWTO, World Bank, etc.), we tried to determine whether, how and how much tourism is contributing to overcome, although slowly, the endemic problems of hunger and underdevelopment. In fact, by calculating a synthetic index of tourism development we attempted to draw a sufficiently detailed and reliable framework about the state of the art and future potential evolution of the tourism in Sub-Saharan Africa.
