The field of food and nutrition has been thoroughly investigated in recent years, leading to the blooming of food texts, books, guides, and successful television programmes. Conversely, what is yet to be investigated is how food and nutrition were conceived in the past. Some of the information we hold derive from the evidence gathered in travel writing, especially in the narratives published during the period of the Grand Tour, when foreign scholars and writers, historians and politicians, artists and scientists, put in writing what they experienced during their travels across Italy, thus creating an incomparable reservoir to draw from in order to increase awareness about Italian places and people, customs and traditions. The Campania region and Naples in particular have been visited and described by both famous and less known figures. Among these, in the late nineteenth century, three German intellectuals (a well-known painter/draughtsman, a professor of philosophy, and a young man of letters), after their visit to the city, collected their impressions in a work published in German in 1893 and translated into Italian exactly a century later. In La Bella Napoli (embellished with over 250 beautiful charcoal drawings depicting characters, arts and crafts, scenes, and views), sections relating to characters, customs, figures, and habits of the incredible neapolitan microcosm stand along with some descriptive “canonical” chapters on the extraordinary historical, artistic, and archaeological heritage of the city and of his famous surroundings. In this connection, the present contribution aims to investigate the several sections devoted by Allers to the description of neapolitan food, nutrition habits, refreshment facilities, and hospitality.
