150The traditional Italian agricultural system has undergone deep changes over the
last 50 years, mainly due to agricultural policies and socio-economic factors that play
an important role in the dynamics of the system with a consequent impact on the
landscape. .In this paper, in the period 1950-2000, the dynamics that occurred in the
Langhe area (Cuneo Province) are investigated, with a particular focus on the rural
landscape of hazelnut. At Italian level, hazelnut has been subject to certification by the
PGI - Protected Geographical Indication protocol. This measure resulted in an
increase in cultivated surfaces, namely up to 20% in the last decade of the period of
analysis. This trend has also led to an increase of the population in these communities.
Evidence of this process has been positively detected in the national, official, statistics
sources (ISTAT) and multi-temporal analysis of historical (1954) and recent (2000)
photograms that allowed to quantify the expansion of hazelnut and its influence on
landscape dynamics. According to these findings, these territories should be widely
exploited by capturing the attention of tourists not only on the landscape, wine and
food, but providing them interpretations of territorial transformations that may be of
interest to a qualified tourism.
