Has the Fixed-Term Parliament Act of 2011 altered parliamentary government in the UK? It is common knowledge that the so-called Westminster model was based among other things on the real power of prime ministers to call early elections at their discretion. The Act of 2011 is instead designed to restrict parliamentary dissolution to situations of crisis or government defeat. The essay argues that, ever since the new statutory rules of 2011 became the law of the land, the UK has abandoned the majority form of democracy.
