The essay examines the issue of intersexualism, a word defining abnormalities or disorders of sexual development that do not allow to clearly ascribe a person to one or other sex. The analysis, carried out in a comparative perspective, focuses on the state of the art at both the international and the EU level and examines the legal orders that have recently taken steps towards the adoption of legislation and public policies to protect and guarantee intersex people. The Author argues that the surgical and hormonal "normalization" of intersex individuals is a particularly serious offense and calls for a simplification of the procedures for rectification of sex without this resulting in the need for surgery. The Author, however, opposes the proposals concerning the possibility to introduce the category "neutral" for the purpose of civil registration of intersexual children.
