Starting from a critical exploration of extreme theories supporting a right to die and an unconditional duty to live, this article investigates a set of shared bioethical orientations in the context of determinations of the appropriateness/inappropriateness of treatment undertaken within the doctor/patient relationship, and the importance of palliative care. The goal pursued is to devise a possible reference framework for regulating the doctor/patient relationship at the end of human life.
