In a two-sided search model, where tlie inatcliing function is characterized by ex post niatch-s])ecific heterogeneity and variahle search intensity, thè relative performance of search and lliring snl>-sidies in tenns of l)oth cost effectiveness and aggregate efficieiicy is assessed. Conditions for cost effectiveness to be obtained are de-fined for both instruments. A compntational exercice shows tliat searcll subsiclies tend to be more effìcient than lliring snbsidies, specially in tenns of nndereniploynient
